Item Details

Low Estimate1800
High Estimate2200
About .55 cal, 26” damascus barrels with bright very fine to near excellent bores showing a little frosting in the grooves and crisp rifling throughout. The barrels have mostly toned to a deep plum-brown patina showing a bit of moderate oxidation overall and good remnants of the damascus twist patterns throughout. The rib shows maker’s name inlaid in gold and some nice gold and silver foliate inlays at the breeches along with what appears to be a gold owl and crown over crossed sword and spear. The lockplates are a deep smoky gray patina and show light foliate scrollwork embellishments accented by gold, the right lock with a recumbent gold buck and the left with a doe. The upper tang also has a gold “1” and the tailpipe and triggerguard finial are embellished in similar form as the lockplates. The checkered walnut halfstock is in traditional Germanic form with attractive walnut triggerguard, generous left-side cheekpiece and checkered sliding patch box cover on the right. The stock features some nice foliate carving as well and remains in very good plus condition showing the expected overall light dings and a number of thin drying cracks scattered throughout the grain and some knots in the wood. The ramrod tip appears to be an old replacement and the original wide sling swivels are intact. The front trigger is a set which will require some mechanical attention while the rear has no set, there do not appear to be half-cocks but the hammers otherwise seem to hold properly. The rifle is sighted with a nice little flip-up tang peep sight, u-notch rear and small German silver blade front. Franz Xaver Baader was gunmaker to the Bavarian royal court from about 1837 to his death in 1864 and this remains a nice representative example of his work. (13C11407-1) {ANTIQUE} (1800/2200)
